Usui sensei created them to help people 'self-cultivate', as it was called. At first glance, they can seem over-simplified, and I have seen many people disregard them as too obvious or of no significance. Yet they are not the rigid orders they may seem to be on first reading, there is great depth if you stop to feel them. We talk a little about them during the training and show you how and why Usui used the gokai in his training and his life. In these five basic phrases is a wealth of wisdom around living a more joyful, simple life. We encourage students to learn the gokai in Japanese as it has the original kototama in it. Anyone familiar with the work of Dr. As the majority of our body consists of water it is possible to see that words can have a calming and healing effect or a detrimental effect on our body and our feelings.
The Reiki Precepts: the Gokai, or Reiki principles
Just for today
Having discovered Reiki healing, and practicing on friends and family, he found they would often come back with the same or different ailment s once they were better. He linked this to the mind, and worked out the five biggest issues we face and reminds us to repeat the principles morning and night to keep a positive mindset. Quite succinct and they look easy to practice, but are they? IF every human in the world focused on more positive aspects of life, by being more relaxed in mind and therefore body, this would be a different planet! Can you influence the past? Change what has happened? No, but today you can practice something, as long as you bare it in mind, and this is why Mikao Usui added this formula. To change mind and body after realising healing is one thing, but staying well comes from within, and that is our real challenge in modern society.

Usui Sensei observed that many people after receiving treatment often returned with new health problems. He realized that if people wanted to be completely healthy, they would have to look after their physical as well as their mental health in the same way. The Gokai Go-5, Kai-principles were formulated by Usui to promote a healthy mindset and change negative thinking patterns. In Jikiden Reiki, the Gokai are spoken in Japanese, so they retain their original power. Kototama in the Japanese language means words that have a linguistic effect.
The five core principles of Sensei Usui are contained within the whole text seen above. The writing is read from top to bottom, right to left. Commonly called The Five Precepts , they start in the third column from the right below the space, and continue in the fourth and fifth columns from the right. Learning to say the words in Japanese can be an illuminating experience because much of the power is lost in translating the words. Whilst these precepts are aimed at those studying the Reiki system, anyone may listen to the recording and try repeating for yourself. Do this by going inwards into your own spiritual heart, and centering there. Allow the conscious mind to become still… let all chatter subside. Then recite them softly, yet audibly.
