Jon Christopher Nelson's electroacoustic music has been performed widely throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, and has been honored with numerous awards including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and Fulbright Commission. He is also the recipient of a Bourges Prize, Luigi Russolo Prize, and numerous electroacoustic commissions. He has composed in residence at Sweden's national Electronic Music Studios during the academic year, as well as in the fall of Nelson received his doctorate and master's of fine arts from Brandeis University and has studied digital audio processing and computer music composition with Barry Vercoe at the MIT media lab. His bachelor's was earned at Bethel College where he graduated magna cum laude.
Jonathan D. Nelson grew up in Culver City and started playing guitar at age 5 when he got his first acoustic guitar. His first band was at age 8 and the band was called "Symbols" and included his sister on maracas. At age 13 he played his first night club with cousin, Ernie Centeno. After dropping out of school, Jon took several music courses at UCLA and at age 18 started his own record label. He started out in the Venice underground punk scene as the manager and producer for the Venice band Neighborhood Watch on their self-titled eight song EP, which was also released on his Indie label Deeter Deets Records. Neighborhood Watch became the opening act for Suicidal Tendencies and in Nelson joined Suicidal replacing original guitarist Grant Estes , who recorded the guitar for their debut album on Frontier Records.

He is a founding member of the internationally recognized Meridian Arts Ensemble, and has collaborated with numerous contemporary composers, most notably Milton Babbitt and Frank Zappa. Jon has been instrumental in the commissioning of over sixty new works for trumpet in various ensembles, and his arrangements have been performed and recorded by the Cologne Stadt Ballet, Atlantic Brass Quintet, Lake George Opera, Ethos Percussion Quartet, Lark Quartet, and Dweezil Zappa. He is currently producing a series of compact disc recordings for 8bells that feature contemporary and newly commissioned works for brass.
